Job Opening: Carroll County Grassroots Organizer

The Baltimore Regional Partnership is a land use and transportation coalition comprised of 1000 Friends  of Maryland, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Citizens Planning and Housing Association, Environmental     Defense, and the Greater Baltimore Urban League.   A 2001 Partnership report found that local government forecasts placed most of Carroll County ’s residential growth to 2020 outside its designated growth areas, consuming more than 28,000 acres of open space.  As a result, the Partnership is initiating an effort to work with local citizens’ groups and other organizations in Carroll County to preserve rural open space and improve quality of life. 

 Job Description

The organizer’s major responsibility will be to work with local activists, citizens’ groups, and other organizations in Carroll County in support of effective rural land preservation strategies and other land use and transportation reforms.  This work will include:

Meeting one-on-one with Carroll County leaders and attending citizen group meetings to learn about
current plans and initiatives related to growth and rural preservation.

Working with the Baltimore Regional Partnership and local Carroll County leaders to develop plans to
bolster rural preservation.

Assisting with research, outreach, and communications strategies included in the plan developed with the
Partnership and local leaders.

Helping to connect Carroll County leaders to the Partnership and its member organizations on issues of
mutual interest.

Qualification

Position requires strong verbal and written communication skills, organizing experience, and familiarity with political and legislative processes. Familiarity with Carroll County issues and organizations is desirable.

Position also requires ability to analyze complex policy and communication problems. Ability to adjust to shifting priorities and schedules and to develop novel methods of engaging diverse constituents also required, as is access to private transportation and knowledge of computer systems and the Internet.

Compensation

Commensurate with experience.  Includes attractive benefits package for full-time work.
