Local Work for Better Transportation and Land Use
While Maryland's 1997 Smart Growth law works to curtail state subsidies for sprawl, the counties and municipalities of the Baltimore region (and across Maryland) retain control over land use planning. Transportation projects are generally initiated by local government as well, although projects involving state funding must then be proposed by Governor Parris N. Glendening and federally-funded projects must be approved by the
Baltimore Regional Transportation Board. Below are examples of recent work by the Baltimore Regional Partnership and partner organizations to improve land use and transportation decisions related to projects around the region.
