Land Use and Transportation Issues Around the Region

RALLY TONIGHT GETS NEW ATTENTION

As groups and citizens from across the Baltimore metropolitan area
prepare to rally at the Baltimore Convention Center at 6:00 tonight for
improved transportation, communities, and drug treatment, the event has
drawn even more public and media attention in the wake of Baltimore
Mayor Martin O'Malley's decision yesterday not to run against Lt.
Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend for the Democratic nomination for
governor this year.  The rally, led by the Citizens Planning and Housing
Association (CPHA), will mark the first joint appearance of the two
prominent elected officials since O'Malley's announcement.  Townsend has
told the media that she will use part of her planned remarks at the
event to respond to a list of priorities O'Malley gave her via Del.
Howard "Pete" Rawlings -- a list which appears to be consistent with the
rally's agenda.

In addition to O'Malley and Townsend, the rally will feature citizen
activists, including transit advocate Ralph E. Moore, Jr. and 1000
Friends of Maryland executive director Dru Schmidt-Perkins, as well as
all but one of the region's chief elected officials.  U.S.
Representative Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., Townsend's presumed Republican
opponent in the November election for governor, is also reportedly
trying to rearrange his schedule to attend.  The event is free and open
to the public, and the Convention Center will have food for sale.  The
location is convenient to transit and will have free parking and shuttle
service tonight from Lot H near Ravens Stadium.
